Why 108 Sun Salutations on the Summer Solstice?

The number 108 is sacred in many ways ranging from astronomy to yoga. For instance, there are 108 Upanishads and 108 Tantras. 108 also symbolizes love, eternity and awakening. In Ayurveda, the sister science to yoga, there are 108 sacred points in the body. And of course, the distance between the Sun and the Earth is roughly 108 times the Sun’s diameter.

We honor the Summer Solstice, which is a time of celebration, with 108 Sun Salutations as an offering or time to acknowledge and celebrate the sun and its life-giving energy. Physically, its believed that your fire (the internal heat we create through breath and movement) cleanses, detoxifies and helps us get more in touch with ourself. This practice helps us move stagnant energy to make room for more light and upward energy in our mental and physical bodies. It also helps us surrender, right? I won’t lie, doing 108 Sun Salutations is hard, but once we surrender to our strength and find the breath to keep going, you will soon find a state of ease and flow, a MOVING MEDITATION if you will.

Doing 108 Sun Salutations comes with an inherent magic and natural alignment that you can only understand after doing them. I hope you’ll come and join me on this journey. You are strong enough. You are ready. You are supported in every way.

Happy Solstice!
